Cedar, fiber cement, engineered composite and clapboard, installed as part of the building envelope rather than as a facelift. What goes on behind the siding — the housewrap, the flashing, the drainage plane — is the part that decides how long the front of it lasts.

Start at the downspouts. Foundation water is a roof-drainage problem more often than a foundation one.
